God’s Family Dinner serves a free hot meal to about 200 people each Thursday; there are no requirements or restrictions–everyone is welcome. We need at least 6 volunteers to serve the meal, greet guests, and clean up from 4:30 to 6:30. Six of the volunteers serve the food by placing it on trays and giving the trays to the guests.
Additional volunteers are always welcome; they can help with serving drinks, keeping tables clean, sweeping floors, and visiting with the guests. Some tasks have more interaction with guests, and some have little or none–we’re happy to put people to work where they feel most comfortable and useful, though the first priority is always to cover the 6 serving positions.
Currently, our greatest need is on the second and third Thursday of each month–especially the third. It would be great if a church could commit to sending 6 or more volunteers on one specific week each month. If that’s too frequent, we can set up a bimonthly or quarterly schedule. Also, if a church has fewer than 6 volunteers but still wants to help on a regular schedule, we can pair them with another organization.
Among our regular volunteers the last several years have been Highland Park Baptist Church, Congregation Agudas Achim, Hope Presbyterian Church, Sun Microsystems Management Team, University Presbyterian Church, as well as youth and college groups from various churches and UT organizations. Since the ministry began in 2004, we have served over 80,000 free meals to hungry souls.
If you would like to volunteer as a an individual or group or need more information, please email our GFD Coordinator, Dr. Paul Taylor, at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the church office at (512) 478-8559.
